The decisions that make a product easier to run, improve and hand over.

Treat operation as part of the product

A successful launch is a beginning. Someone needs to know whether the service is healthy, how to investigate a problem and how to make a change safely. Monitoring, ownership and an understandable deployment process belong in the initial plan.

Prefer clarity over cleverness

Readable code and a small set of consistent patterns make it easier for another developer to contribute. Document the decisions that are not obvious from the code, including the constraints and alternatives that shaped the architecture.

Test the important behaviour

Focus automated checks on the paths that matter to the business and the boundaries most likely to fail. A useful test catches a meaningful regression and explains the expected behaviour. Combine these checks with review and realistic exploration of the interface.

Keep releases repeatable

Separate environment configuration from application code. Build the same way in development and delivery pipelines. Make it possible to identify what changed and restore a known working version. These habits reduce uncertainty when a release needs attention.

Plan the handover early

Maintain an operating guide as the product grows. Include setup instructions, service ownership, recovery steps and known limitations. A product should be understandable to the people who will own it, not dependent on the memory of the people who first built it.
